Concept & Design
Hosting & Support
The electronic platform is used by people with learning difficulties and limited linguistic competence. The platform is of major importance for young and old.
The solution we created for this target group consists of an online platform focused to stimulate interactions and personal growth. In this environment many internet-applications are made available for this specific user group. Important characteristics of the platform are: safe, recognizable, interesting and fun.
The online platform allows users to stay informed, have fun, make contacts with others for their leisure and communicate with their health care institution. Different user groups use this platform daily without any accompaniment necessary.
E-learning is the future!
"Through the platform of ookjij I have MADE more friends"
Comprehensive accessibility in a safe environment.
In 2001 the initiative takers of Stichting Ookjij.nl identified some important everyday challenges of young people with a visual and mental impairment regarding the Internet. There did not exist a safe and accessible place that allows them to learn and be entertained online. These young adults told that they would like to visit the Internet to play games, read about subjects with a high level of informative content and get to know others to interact with. After creating the website, the foundation and Complaid B.V. asked us to create a safe environment to encourage independence and stimulate self confidence of the user groups.
User-interface and user-profile for user-specific navigation and control.
Everyone with access to the platform has given their own personal profile. The solution offers a complete online environment with a lot of regularly updated course material in TARA such as social competences, hygiene, and general life skills. Users also have access to their person mailbox, a game platform, a life-book with personal information and pictures, and communication channels to make new friends within the Ookjij community. In addition, the platform allows health institutions to communicate with their clients digitally, by sending surveys, publications, news about the organisation or access to a personal Support-plan. Furthermore, we helped Ookjij tackle some, at the time, technical challenges such as: responsive design, HTML5 videochat, recording HTML5 audio and video and the contact module.
Involvement of key user groups.
To make sure the platform works optimally and aligns with the desires and requirements of the user groups, we involve them continuously during the ideation and development process. For example by focused user interviews and platform usage observations. We designed the platform and its functionalities in such a way that the user is guided and supported in their online experience. This allows them to go online entirely independent.
All modules are handled by specific design rules:
- Every module has their own unique color. The color of the button is the main menu. The colors of the other buttons have a clear difference in its brightness, to navigate people with a visual impairment on the platform.
- Every user has his or her own profile with personal settings for accessibility (physical and mental).
- All functionalities are supported with audio for users who have reading difficulties.
- Navigation within the modules are simplified and consistent throughout the platform.
While visiting the platform users gain information about various subjects. This knowledge support their development and a positive self image, which stimulates better integration in society. The application is made accessible for blind people and people with a physical impairment with the use of an intuitive design with one or two button operation and audio. The platform is also user-friendly on a tablet.
